It's a new year and it's a good time to make some resolutions to put your finances in order.
One of the most important-especially if you are thinking of making a home purchase-is to check your credit report. You can get your credit report for free once a year at www.annualcreditreport.com. Be Careful! Don't be fooled by other sites where you may be getting a free credit report but you are also signing up for credit monitoring with a monthly charge! To check the guidelines or get any questions answered regarding your free annual credit report visit www.ftc.gov/freereports.
You want to be aware of what is on your report- check for the accuracy of the items and follow the steps to correct anything that is incorrect. Most of this can be done via the internet.
If you are thinking of buying a home this year, you don't want any surprises when you apply for financing. When you have reviewed your credit report in advance this won't happen. If there are any errors, it's better to take the steps to correct them when your not under the pressure of meeting a deadline in a purchase contract.
Also, try to pay down or pay off any debt you may have.
Your credit score is becoming more and more important in all phases of your life. Not only are lenders checking your credit score, insurance companies and even some employers are using credit scores!
